Broken Chains Inc.

Working Toward a Brighter Future

Broken Chains Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization serving men, women and youth who have been impacted by the justice system particularly those Citizens who have been recently released from prison and returning home to the District of Columbia.

Our mission is to educate and empower Citizens by facilitating access to vital resources and services such as food, clothing, housing, counseling, transportation, and employment assistance which are amongst the most critical needs upon reentry back into society.  Additionally, we host various trainings and workshops throughout the year to educate and empower Citizens with the necessary skills to obtain employment as well as provide job referrals and placement opportunities.

We want to spread our message of hope and compassion and believe that a single action can make a difference in the community, and collectively we can greatly impact the world.

Kennetta Calloway - Founder Broken Chains Inc.

Meet the Founder

Hello my name is Kennetta Calloway and I am the Founder and Executive Director of Broken Chains Inc. a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization.  I am a native Washingtonian and I have lived, educated, married, and raised my children in this great city.  I am a mother, sister, aunt, friend, mentor, leader and retired from the Federal Government after 38 years of  service.

While my post retirement plans were to travel the world, COVID-19 changed those plans and gave me time to look at my purpose and passion in life and August 2020, I founded Broken Chains Inc.

Broken Chains Inc. was conceived out of the challenges of having to provide support to a loved one released from prison.  Seven years ago my children's father was released from prison and reentered society.  It was a joyous time as well as a very emotional one.  As a family we were unprepared and at a loss on how and where to go to get assistance.  It was very a frustrating time.

According to the DC Department of Corrections Facts and Figures April 2021, an average 2,000 inmates were released back into society between the years 2019 - 2021.  Many of them return home without any support of family or friends and lack the knowledge of who to contact or where to go to obtain the vital assistance needed to sustain them.  As a result, many returning citizens become homeless or are reincarcerated within the first 3-5 years of release from prison. It is vitally important that returning citizens have a support system in which they can rely on to help them successfully reenter back into society.

Broken Chains' mission is to increase community support and access to information to educate and empower Returning Citizens in DC.  It is also our mission to help reduce the rate of recidivism and increase the rate of success stories of returning citizens.

Get Involved

We are so happy you’re interested in getting involved with our work here at Broken Chains Inc. There are so many ways you can help, from making a donation, volunteering your time and even partnering with us.

Through our backpack campaign, we have distributed over 85 Welcome Home backpacks to Returning Citizens (both women and men) who are housed at Reynolds & Associates Women's Reentry Residential Center, Friendship Place Shelter for Men and Kinara Behavioral Health Services.

The Welcome Home Backpacks contained a Welcome home letter, essential care items such as soap, deodorant, lotion, toothpaste and toothbrush, socks, disposable razors sanitary products for women, personal protective equipment (mask, hand sanitizer and antibacterial wipes), metro fare cards, Walmart gift cards and a directory of  DC resources.

By lending your support, you’ll become a valuable part of our Social Services Organization as well as help strengthen our activities and operations.  We appreciate all donations; however, a donation of $50 will provide a complete Welcome Home backpack to a Returning Citizen.
