106. Slavery, the subjugation of human beings, is a serious violation of both the dignity of the human person and the inviolability and equality of every human being. It constitutes an attack on human dignity, a wrenching of families, depriving the victims of their integrity as persons. It distorts the work of the market and is a violation of human rights. It violates the law of God and the natural balance of all life upon earth. It has given rise to conflicts which have ended in war. It is a political crime that must be rejected unreservedly.
78. Faced with the extreme and irreversible damage caused by contemporary lifestyles, all of us must rediscover the inviolable integrity of creation and see our own responsibility in protecting it. Ecological responsibility means giving priority to the ecology of everyone and everything, firstly towards oneself and the immediate surroundings. This means that each of us must strive to live in harmony with the natural environment. Beyond this, it must be said that the quality of life itself depends on the environment. We cannot isolate ourselves from nature and still claim to live in a world worthy of respect. What we are and what we are becoming are a part of the biosphere and the life-giving flow of all creation. The latter, which is the very name of God’s own being, is to be recognised as the foundation of all culture.
118.Unfortunately, the system of production-consumption has not proved capable of this, turning to an unnatural and invasive approach. The result is that many species are rapidly disappearing, and we may suspect that these will not make it to the end of the road: “O my soul, remember the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we drunk the wine of her rivulets” (Isaiah 51:17). d2c66b5586
