Many students think of us as a math tutor online or as their on-demand online tutor. Others trust us for all things related to online math education—coming to use when they find themselves thinking “I don’t understand my homework assignment! and need some homework help!
It starts off with Hobbes "helping" Calvin with his math homework. When Calvin's mom sees him reading comic books, Calvin claims that he's all done with his homework and that he's doing just fine in class. Calvin's mom then leaves to go to a parent-teacher conference with Miss Wormwood, which of course freaks out Calvin and makes him nervous about what Miss Wormwood will tell his mom (and what his mom will tell his dad).
After Calvin's mom gets home from her meeting with Miss Wormwood, she admits to her husband that it didn't go so well and they talk about what Miss Wormwood had said. After that, Calvin's parents talk to him about what Miss Wormwood had told them: Calvin's not doing so well in class and Miss Wormwood feels that Calvin needs to start putting more effort into his schoolwork, particularly when it comes to math. Deciding that Calvin needs to start spending more time on his homework, the first thing that happens is Dad comes up to Calvin to help him with some math homework, but Calvin's very resistant to it. Calvin argues that learning math is totally irrelevant and that he can get along just fine without it, but his dad points out that almost all jobs require some form of math -- to try and get Calvin more motivated, his dad uses pennies to teach him some basic addition and subtraction. Later on, he claims to his wife that it seemed to make Calvin more excited to learn math.
Calvin is notably inept at the mathematic portion of his homework. He struggles with the most rudimentary addition and subtraction problems, due to flawed logical thinking and a lack of effort. He will often overcomplicate simple operations (at times with imaginary math tools and principles).
Sherman is in his lab, working on something and ranting about a helium shortage, when Andy comes down to give him lunch, only to find that something has gone wrong. Sherman gets Calvin and Hobbes, who are working on the former's math homework, to see the problem: Socrates' transmitter chip has merged with his mind, becoming a part of his consciousness. This is bad, since it renders the chip worthless and has the chance of erasing Socrates' personality, leaving him an Empty Shell.
With that, Andy prompts them to get in the capsule, and they gladly oblige. Socrates wakes up, the others engage in some dialogue covering up what they really did (and revealing that they had a bet on when he'd wake up, the money from which was taken from Socrates himself), and Socrates is beamed home. Calvin and Hobbes then return home to resume working on the former's math homework.
Whenever Calvin tries to do his homework, he asks Hobbes to do it for him, but Calvin doesn't notice how Hobbes gets questions wrong (for example, when he didn't know a subtraction problem, so he put in Atlanta, Georgia). Hobbes also teaches Calvin in his math homework, but his theories are wrong (like in one comic where Calvin asks Hobbes what 3+8 is, so Hobbes teaches Calvin, "Well, first you assign the value as X. X always means multiply, so you take the numerator [that's Latin for "number eighter"], and you put that number on the other side. Then you take 3 from the other side, so what times 3 equals 8 The answer, of course, is six.") This however, is most likely intentional. Hobbes still claims that his knowledge of "math theories" is from instinct. 153554b96e
