When it comes to his novels, SALEM'S LOT is a strong contender for one of King's best: it's an evocative, spooky and frightening spin on the old vampire mythos which can best be summed up as Dracula in America. This three-hour TV miniseries perfectly encapsulates the strengths of the story, showing all of the relevant set-pieces and plot points and at the same time building a fine atmosphere of creeping suspense.Compared to modern-day King adaptations like yawnsome UNDER THE DOME, SALEM'S LOT is a masterpiece. It has that slightly dated but nonetheless laden-with-atmosphere feel of '70s US TV horror, and it doesn't hold back on the frights, either. Sure, the floating kid stuff is what most people remember about it, but my favourite parts involve Reggie Nalder's Kurt Barlow, who must be the most frightening vampire ever to appear on screen. Certainly his make-up job deserves an Oscar, it's that effective.Elsewhere, the old King trope of having a supernatural situation exposing the whims, secrets and vices of his small-town cast works well. David Soul is perfectly adequate as the lonesome outsider, but even better are the ordinary folk caught up in a never-ending nightmare: Geoffrey Lewis as the gravedigger, Lance Kerwin as the horror-obsessed kid, Ed Flanders as the doctor. Watch out for old-timer Elisha Cook Jr as the town drunk and newcomer Bonnie Bedelia (DIE HARD) as the love interest.Sure, the first half of this miniseries is pretty slow; the plot takes a while to get off the ground, but at the same time it's thoroughly engrossing and it really lets rip come the second half. What I take away from it are the delicious chills that arise, not from the various encounters with vampires, but from the gradual way the townsfolk disappear from the streets as they succumb to the inevitable. Top notch stuff; '70s-era claustrophobic paranoia at its best. 153554b96e
