Last night like many of you I downloaded Mountain Lion to update to the newest Apple OS. During the install procress I was told my Harddrive was corrupted and needed to be repaired. After running the Verify Disk utility the following errors came up
I had the exact problem word for word. The hard drive is completely corrupted. I tried restoring with time machine back up but it didn't work. I took it to apple store- they tried everything again including erasing the disc but nothing works. The hard disk is inaccessible. I was told a new disc would cost 119 and I have to bear it. They claim my disc already had a \"problem\" which manifested because of the major install. Told them about lots of similar problems on forums. Reply was \" if you do any search you'll find people with similar problems. It is just coincidence\". Suggested downloading mountain lion onto on of their systems in front of me to see what happens but was told they are not allowed. Offered to bring a friend's laptop to try... I was told \"they may have a similar hard drive problem\".
I was always impressed with the product line and extremely helpful apple store employees. They usually don't create a fuss with this sort of thing. This is my first nightmare experience. Completely shocked by the experience. The guy was just not ready to accept that it was the \"upgrade\" that triggered hard drive catastrophe. Until the install it was perfectly fine with no \"symptoms of any problem. It is just past the 1 yr warranty for my bad luck.
Alternatively, you could install Mountain Lion on an external hard drive or thumb drive, which would create a usable Recovery HD partition on that drive. If you ever needed recovery mode, you can boot into it using that external drive or thumb drive.
Well not exactly total system failure. But the install caused software failure and hard drive inaccessible for a long period. It is not happening to everyone so probably my software was corrupted because of installs and uninstalls and the major upgrade caused a breakdown because of missing codes.
Mountain Lion apparently causes hd directory corruption that makes Disk Utility identify the problem as a hard disk problem. When I tried to install Mountain Lion, it said installation could not proceed and instructed that the hard drive needed repair. Apple Disk Utility reported that the hard drive was unrepairable. That did not make sense to me.
I deleted the 1st Mountain Lion copy and downloaded a fresh file. After repairing the hard drive directory yet again with DiskWarrior, the third attempt at installing Mountain Lion proceeded uneventfully and works flawlessly so far. Disk Utility now indicates that there is no problem with the hard drive.
So, no, software shouldn't be able to actually \"break\" a hard drive, but my experience indicates to me that software can cause code problems that are interpreted by Disk Utility as a hard disk problem. Why DiskWarrior could handle and repair my hard disk and Disk Utility could not is a question I would like answered.
I am having the same problem as everyone else, except my drive fails to verify or repair and doesn't even list specific problems. It also repeatedly locks the drive, but I've learned the Terminal command to unlock it. I'm out of town (away from my backups), and I'm also about to buy a new MacBook Pro, so unwilling to spend money on an extra hard drive or other fixes. I believe I already have DiskWarrior, if I can just get to it...
Hi folks. I have a Macbook Pro 13\" with an upgraded Crucial 64GB M4 ssd drive (OS version 10.7.2). Just two days ago my machine froze and i had to shut it down manually holding the power button. After trying to restart, i could not get past the grey boot screen, tried a few things online and finally got to a screen prompting me to choose from 4 options, restore from time machine backup, install new os x, go to online help and run verify disk. I opted for the last option and saw that disk utility said i had corruption, ran the repair disk and got a messages of corruption and finally a green line stating all was repaired. I still was not able to boot up to my desktop. So i swapped my current SSD drive with my original Toshiba 160gb regular hard disk drive (OS 10.6.x) that came with my MBP when i bought it, but was not able to boot either on that - got the flashing 'folder w/question mark' screen. Tried holding down the 'option' button to no avail. Decided to go into Apple store to the Genius bar. After troubleshooting the technician, diagnosed it most likely to be a bad hard drive IDE cable - repair receipt states ''Front HDD BRKT Assembly\" was replaced. So i had left my original Toshiba hdd with Genius Bar and picked it up today post repair and it booted up perfectly at the store. After coming back home, i obviously swapped it out to my Crucial SSD drive which is what i use and have all my data in. Now when i run 'verify disk' on disk utility i get a few messages. Main one being 'the volume Mac OS X was found corrupt and needs to be repaired' - i have also inserted the screen shot to show a few other errors. I am wondering if it is best to wipe the entire SSD drive out and do a new clean install or try and repair this disk Also has the SSD drive gone corrupt Should i RMA it with Crucial for a replacement Thanks much.
Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say \"Verified\" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is \"Verified\" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
IMPORTANT: The location of certain files are different if you have Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed. To check if it is installed, open Word, and then click About Word from the Word menu. If the version number is 14.2.0 or above, you have Service Pack 2 and you should follow the Service Pack 2 steps when provided in this article.
No. Quit Word, and drag one of the files back to its default location and test again. If the error re-appears, the file you just dragged back is corrupt. Move it to the Trash. If there's still no error, drag the other file from your desktop to the Trash. Congratulations, this solved the problem.
A corrupt Mac hard drive or partition stops responding to your commands, behaves abnormally, crashes often, goes undetected, and does not mount. In such a case, the storage drive and the data stored in it become inaccessible, and you suffer from data loss.
b) For non-boot or external volume, open the Terminal app from Dock. Type diskutil list and press Return. From the connected drives with partition details, note the corrupt disk or partition identification number, say /dev/disk2 or /dev/disk2s2.
f) Click Browse and choose a location where you wish to save the selected files and folders. Click Save. Wait till the software recovers files from corrupt Mac drive partition.
