Who is Syekh Saman al-Madani
Syekh Saman al-Madani was a prominent scholar and sufi master who lived in the 12th century. His full name was Muhammad as-Samman bin Abdulkarim al-Madani al-Syafi'i. He was born in Madinah, the city of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), in the year 1130 H. He memorized the Quran at a young age and studied various Islamic sciences under eminent teachers. He excelled in fiqh, hadith, tafsir, and tasawwuf.
He traveled to many lands to seek knowledge and spread Islam. He visited Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Iran, India, and Indonesia. He met many saints and scholars along the way, such as Syekh Abdul Qodir Jaelani, Syekh Ahmad Rifai, Syekh Ibrahim Dasuqi, and Syekh Nuruddin al-Raniri. He also performed hajj several times and visited the holy sites in Makkah and Madinah.
He founded the Sammaniyya order, a branch of the Khalwatiyya order, which focused on dhikr (remembrance of Allah), zuhd (asceticism), and khidmah (service to humanity). He wrote many books and poems on various topics, such as Manaqib al-Awliya (The Virtues of the Saints), Diwan al-Samman (The Poems of As-Samman), and Risalah al-Tawhid (The Treatise on Monotheism). He also composed a famous qasidah (ode) called Qasidah al-Burdah al-Sammaniyya (The Mantle Ode of As-Samman), which praised the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his family.
He died in Madinah in the year 1189 H. He was buried near the grave of his grandfather, Syekh Abdulkarim al-Madani, who was a descendant of Imam Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them).
